SERVICE LEARNING

Mexico is a significant location for service learning. Mexico offers tons of exciting experiences not only in its cultural and natural diversity, but also in its breath of ancient historical ruins. Mexico has a rich culture, a strong Spanish heritage, and a geographical location easily reached. Moreover, the Mexican people are extraordinarily friendly and easy to get to know.

One of the main objectives of the program is to give international students a complete overview of Mexican and Latino cultures. Participants will be able to better comprehend relevant aspects of Mexican society, such as the role of traditions, family, religion, poverty, and gender issues.

HOW DOES IT WORK

Students from universities all over the world will work in different communities and contexts depending on students' interests, academic fields, career goals, or expertise. No previous experience is needed. Participants only need the willingness to learn about another culture, improve the lives of others, and care about the personal growth of individuals. Based upon information received in the application, service learning volunteers will be assigned to a specific community in which they will be involved in a project that most appropriately fits their needs.

COURSES

Participants will be enrolled in regular a course related to Social Programs in Mexico. This course is related to the service learning experience that students will be carrying out in their different NGOs

CREDITS, GRADES, AND NONCREDIT OPTIONS

Some students choose the service learning experience as part of an independent project or as an internship. Students will need permission from an academic advisor at their home institution. If this is the case, students pay the home institution´s tuition directly for credit and pay the UPAEP for the service learning experience and accommodations.
